Massachusetts Truck Driving Schools FAQ

What endorsements only require a written exam?
To receive your Hazardous Materials, Tank Vehicles, or Doubles/Triples endorsements, you must take and pass a written exam.

Are there any endorsements that require me to take a road test?
Yes, you must take and pass both a written exam and a road test to obtain your Air Brakes endorsement. You will also be required to take a written test and a driving test to receive a Massachusetts CDL, which you must obtain before you apply for any additional endorsements.

What types of CDL permits are available in the state of Massachusetts?
You may apply for an intrastate of an interstate CDL.

What are the differences between an intrastate and an interstate CDL?
With an intrastate CDL, you are required to remain in the state of Massachusetts when driving a commercial vehicle. You must be 18 years old to qualify for an intrastate CDL. With an interstate CDL, you can drive your commercial vehicle from state to state throughout the United States. To qualify for an interstate CDL permit, you must be 21 years old.

What requirement must I meet to be eligible for a CDL?
You must have a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Massachusetts, a birth certificate, and a Department of Transportation Medical Certificate.

How long does it typically take to complete the general knowledge exam?
It typically takes one hour to finish the general knowledge exam.

How long does it typically take to complete the written exam for each endorsement?
The Hazardous Materials, Tank Vehicles, Air Brakes, and Doubles/Triples written exams should take about thirty minutes to complete.

How much does it cost to take a written exam and/or road test?
The fee varies, depending on the exam. The general knowledge written exam costs approximately $30, and the written exam for each endorsement is approximately $10 (if you take the exams on the same day). The road test costs approximately $20. These costs are for the exam only; you must also pay a fee for your CDL and for each endorsement. Contact your local DMV for the most up-to-date information regarding exam fees and costs.

How long do I have my CDL permit before it expires?
Your CDL permit expires every two years, so you will need to renew.

Am I required to provide my own truck and trailer when taking the road test?
Yes, you must provide your own truck and trailer for the road test. If you attend a Massachusetts driving school, you can (in most cases) rent their vehicle.
